A Study on the Relationship between Depression and Suicidal Attempt among Elderly Man Living Alone in Permanent Rental Housing: Analyzing Moderating Effect of Social Support

Abstract

|
The study aim to examine the moderating effect of social support in the relationship between depression and suicidal attempt of elderly man living alone in permanent rental housing. Main research questions can be summarized as follows: (1) The relationship between depression and suicidal attempt among elderly man living alone in permanent rental housing; (2) The moderation effect of social support on the relationship between depression and suicidal attempt. We used the data collected from 347 participants among elderly man living alone in permanent rental housing on Nowon-gu, Seoul, Korea. The Mental Health Survey Data were conducted by mental health social worker and public social worker from February to March, 2013. This study reports several noteworthy findings. First, we found that depression of male older adults significantly influenced suicidal attempt. Second, the findings confirm that social support moderates the relationship between depression and suicidal attempt. Results suggest that effective intervention strengthening social support among male older adults living alone in permanent rental housing should be introduced.
